Corn harvested at the “dent” stage when it’s dry and mature is a grain used for animal feed. Corn that is harvested in the young “milk” stage is juicy and sweet and eaten as a vegetable.

Corn tends to dry out once the sugars turn to starch, so it’s best eaten fresh, canned, or frozen. But the most popular way to enjoy corn is steamed and straight off the cob!

Butter

Butter is made from cow’s cream which has been churned. Its creamy, rich flavor makes it a popular ingredient for cooking and seasoning.

Unsalted butter is most commonly used in cooking and baking. Whereas salted and sweetened butter is used as a spread for sandwiches, or to flavor cooked vegetables.

Butter is a popular complement to microwave corn on the cob. It helps bring out the sweetness of the corn and adds more flavor.

Seasonings

Although corn is delicious on its own or with a bit of butter, seasonings can transform it into something special. A sprinkle of salt is often added to corn on the cob to help balance the sweetness.

  • Increase the cooking time if you’re cooking more than one ear of corn. In general, add 1-2 minutes of cooking time for each additional ear of corn.

  • Check your corn cobs while they cook if you’re unsure of the cooking time. You never want overcooked corn, because it becomes chewy and dense.

  1. Place Corn on Plate

    Keep the husks and silks on the ear of corn. Place it on a plate in the microwave.

  2. Cook Corn in the Microwave

    Cook corn in the microwave for 3-4 minutes on HIGH.

  3. Cut Off the Ends

    Remove the corn from the microwave and cut off the ends.

  4. Remove Corn Husks and Silks

    Peel off the husk and silks and discard. Always be careful when you shuck corn that’s been microwaved, as it will release hot steam.

  5. Serve

    Serve the microwave corn on the cob with butter and a sprinkle of salt and pepper.

Corn is such a simple yet delicious food. Its mild sweet taste lends itself to so many flavor combinations.

  • For any meal where you’d serve fries, try swapping them out for corn on the cob for a healthier option. Roasted chicken, steak, and pulled pork sandwiches can benefit from a fresh, low-fat side like corn.

Storage Instructions

Raw corn loses its sweetness as it ages because the sugars turn into starch. So, it’s best to buy your corn from the grocery store the same day you plan to cook it.

Once you’ve cooked the corn, it will keep in the refrigerator for 1-2 days. You can also keep cooked corn in the freezer for up to 8 months.

The best way to store corn is in a heavy-duty freezer bag. It can be difficult to fit the cobs into an airtight container.

If you do plan to freeze corn, it’s best to cook it and cut the kernels from the cob. This will help save space in your freezer, and make it easier to store.
