  • Use the right attachment on your food processor. The shredding disc will give you really uniform strands that are also a good length. Then, when you put the potatoes in the pan, they’ll have a bigger surface area to fry. This will result in crispy hash browns!

  • Soak your potatoes before frying them. You can just use plain cold water and some of the starch will be released, meaning that the centers will cook through at the same time as the outer layers turn crisp.

  • Take the time to dry your potatoes after soaking. You can squeeze them and toss them in a bowl.By removing excess moisture, your potatoes will go much crispier. If you skip this stage, you risk ending up with soggy hash browns!

  • Check that your pan is non-stick, or use a cast-iron skillet. This will stop the potatoes from sticking to the pan bottom and then breaking up when you try to flip or remove them from the pan.

  1. Prepare the Potatoes

    First, peel and shred potatoes using either a food processor or a sharp knife. Put them into your bowl and add the salt.

    Then, pour in the ice and enough cold water to make sure that the potatoes are fully covered. Stir the salt and ice into the water.

    Cover the bowl. Refrigerate for about 2 hours.

    Once chilled, you need to put your soaked potatoes into the colander. Use fresh water to drain the starch away.

    Next, make sure that you dry your potatoes well. Squeeze them and toss them in the colander to remove any excess liquid.

  2. Make the Hash Browns

    Use a medium heat on your stove. Heat your non-stick pan or cast-iron skillet.

    Make sure there’s enough vegetable oil to cover the bottom of your pan.

    Once your pan is hot, place the shredded potatoes on the bottom. Allow them to fry for about 12 to 15 minutes, making sure that you don’t touch or turn them at this point!

    Once the potatoes are crispy, you can flip them carefully. Fry them on the other side for about 2 to 3 minutes until they’re fully browned.

    You don’t need to stir or cover your hash browns while they’re frying. Let the vegetable oil do its work!
